This term, our pupils embarked on an exciting journey exploring their local area through the concept of belonging. Living and learning in beautiful Llandudno, we wanted our children to connect deeply with their community and understand their place in the wider world.
We kicked off our topic with a memorable trip aboard the Land Train, touring the sights of Llandudno and seeing our town from a fresh perspective. Back in the classroom, we developed our geographical skills by exploring maps, locating our homes, discovering Wales's place in the UK, and understanding where our country sits in the world. We also took a digital school trip using Google Maps, allowing us to explore Llandudno's landmarks in even greater detail.
Inspired by the vibrant artwork of James Rizzi, the children critically analysed his distinctive style, discussing what appealed to them and which elements they wanted to incorporate into their own creations. They then selected landmarks meaningful to them and designed their own colourful Rizzi-style cities, celebrating the places that make Llandudno special to them.
Our descriptive writing skills flourished this term. We introduced adjectives and explored how they enhance writing. Using our Land Train experience, pupils wrote recounts packed with descriptive language. Through careful scaffolding—building word banks, crafting sentences, and redrafting—the children produced polished final pieces using Adobe and PicCollage.
Our local focus extended to the wildlife of the Great Orme, particularly the famous goats. This naturally led us to the traditional tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, which we explored in both English and Welsh. The children delighted in applying their adjective knowledge to create wonderfully grotesque wanted posters for the troll—the grosser the description, the better!
In Design Technology, we channelled our learning about the story into a practical challenge: building bridges strong enough for the billy goats. Pupils investigated material properties including strength and durability, experimenting with foil, straws, spaghetti, and paper. Through trial and error, they discovered that doubling up materials—bundling straws together or folding foil—significantly increased strength.
This term has given our children a deeper appreciation of Llandudno and a stronger sense of belonging in their community.
